Georgia is making progress with victims' rights! The Sheriff's office in Coweta County has amended its procedures and is training staff to notify victims of their rights. The new procedures are aimed at providing better protection for victims of domestic violence.
Under the new requirements, a person facing domestic violence charges must be held for at least 24 hours, unless released earlier by a judge, allowing the victim more time to seek safety or other resources.
To ensure victims are aware of their Marsy's Law rights, deputies now provide them with a copy of Georgia's Crime Victims Bill of Rights. Deputies have also been instructed to follow up with victims to collect more evidence and check on their well-being.
