The Georgia Office of Victim Services, a division of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles recently conducted a training conference for the state’s district attorneys and their victim-witness assistance offices.
As part of the conference, Brandon Hembree, a partner with Impact Public Affairs and the mayor of Sugar Hill provided an update on the Criminal Record Responsibility Act (CRRA).
He shared the success of advocates working tirelessly with Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan and others this past legislative session to pass the CRRA, which calls for all Georgia criminal justice data to be uniformly entered into the Georgia Crime Information Center database.
As part of this new legislation, Hembree further explained the CRRA will help to create a unified, statewide automated victim notification (AVN) system for victims and their families to get consistent and accurate information pertaining to their cases. This legislation was signed into law on May 2 by Governor Brian Kemp.
“Advocate! Advocate! Advocate!” Hembree also stressed the important role advocates played in helping to pass this critical legislation and will continue to play as it relates to victims’ rights.
He encouraged conference attendees to reach out to their local and state elected officials to be victim’s rights subject matter experts.
Hembree concluded his remarks by recommending attendees stay up to date on information related to Georgia victims’ rights by liking Marsy’s Law for Georgia’s social media pages.
